“I want to defend my Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title”
Stuttgart. Iga Swiatek is the player to beat at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Last year’s winner and world No. 1, who has been out injured in the past few weeks, is again the top favourite for this year’s title in the Porsche Arena. The Pole spoke about......her current fitness:
“I feel good. I’m not injured anymore so that’s the most important thing for me. I used the time in Warsaw to rest up a bit and not think about tennis. I was still working out and getting back to practicing step-by-step. And now I’m here and I think I’m ready.”
...her aims for the tournament:
“Obviously, I would like to defend my title. Of course, all of us want to win the tournament. It doesn’t really matter what happened last year because it’s a totally different story. Stuttgart is a special one for me because I have really nice memories from last year. It’s the first tournament on clay so for sure I would love to play well. I also know that I might be a bit rusty because I’m coming back from injury. So, I’m keeping my expectations low.”
...her return to Stuttgart:
“Coming back is really nice. I love being in Stuttgart. Playing indoors, the tournament in the Porsche Arena has a totally different atmosphere. It has such a nice audience and everything is so elegant. I really love it. I just hope I’m going to play good tennis.”
...her first practice sessions in the Porsche Arena:
“The practice sessions really help me to get my focus 100 per cent and be able to imagine what decisions I would have to make during matches. I’d say I was ready and the sessions tell me that I’m playing as if I hadn’t had a break. So it’s pretty nice.”
...her Chinese opponent Qinwen Zheng:
“I didn’t watch her first round match. I never watch my opponent’s matches. It’s the job of my coach to watch them and see what we have to do on court. I just focus on myself. The past matches we played against each other were pretty tough and playing her is always a challenge. I’m not going to take anything for granted.”
...Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2023” list:
“I’m pretty proud of myself for making it onto the list. It’s such a great honour. At the same time, I don’t know how it happened. When I’m living my life day by day, I don’t think about things like that, but I’m happy that my work has been acknowledged on court and off the court as well. It is something that has also motivated me to work harder next year.”
